Houston Running Club Donates $23,000 Toward Harvey Relief

The Houston Striders, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, donated $23,000 to the Memorial Park Conservancy on April 11 to assist the post-Hurricane Harvey rebuilding process.

The donation is in addition to a previous $15,000 contribution made in December. The combined $38,000 in donated funds is intended to fund various costs associated with Hurricane Harvey recovery, such as new equipment, removal of downed trees and path restoration.

Wednesday’s donation was sourced from a fund collected during the 12th annual Houston Half & 10K race hosted each October. For every half-marathon registration, $5 was donated to the relief fund.

“Seeing our familiar parkland, paths and trails restored to their original state is important to reestablishing a sense of normalcy after the storm,” Striders President Chad Holmes said. “Memorial Park is the lifeline of the running and walking community, and we hope that our gift will guarantee every walker, runner and visitor will enjoy this iconic green space in the future.”

The Houston Striders was founded in 1985 and features 400 members. The club showcases the Houston Half & 10K each October during the last 12 years.
